We love spas, plain and simple. They’re luxurious, comforting and relaxing. And who doesn’t love to feel pampered. So why not capture some of this luxury and translate it into your home!
Kathy Flanigan, for the Bismarck Tribune, talked with Jean Kolb, director of wellness for the Kohler Co. and Kelly Morrissey of the Fontana Spa at the Abbey Resort to find out the best tips for creating the perfect bath experience. Kolb explains that “a perfect bath stimulates all five senses.”
1 Dim the lights either by using candles (Kolb suggests soy candles because of their delicate aroma) or changing the light bulbs.
2 Put a few big fluffy towels on the floor for you to step on after you’re done and one nearby to towel off afterwards.
3 Sound-wise, choose whatever means relaxation to you. This could be your favorite music or even television, which Morrissey says is especially popular with men.
4 Keep the water at a temperature that’s higher than your body temperature (about 101 to 102 degrees). When it gets too warm, put a cool compress on your forehead with lavender or another essential oil. Another tip for keeping cool is to have a pitcher with ice water nearby to pour over your legs.
5 For a lovely smell, add fragrance to the bath. If you’re looking for an energized experience, go with orange (Kolb suggests squeezing one into the bath) or lavender for relaxation.
6 Include a chilled glass of wine or champagne. According to Morrissey, this increases blood flow. As your bath is nearing an end, indulge in a piece of chocolate.
7 When your fingers look like prunes, it’s time to come out.
